So Rog goes "He made his own sausages...F*** that" and we all agreed we were overwhelmed. Jeff had upped the stakes.

Yes, Jeff confirmed his sausage efforts with handy hints, like the longer the intestine the bigger the sausage and (sometime later, out of context) I heard him say that had he would have made his bigger had he of known... ...but never pay more than a buck a meter for intestines he warned...

Bec's impressive all(!) potato sweeties (no way) (Yeh way...all made of potato) came in at third: potato candy and potato candy icecream and a potato puff cake.

The Rules of Iron Chief

1. The secret ingredient will be selected at random on Wednesday afternoon at 1pm.

2. The contestant will have to prepare a main course using the secret ingredient for a Saturday night main course.

3. The contestant will choose a theme for the entrée and desert, to compliment their main, and advise the two secondary contestants before 12:30 on Thursday afternoon. If the theme does not correspond with the main dish the points for the secret ingredient for the main ingredient shall be halved.

4. The two secondary contestants are to bring either a desert or entrée to the event. The entrée and desert are to have minimal preparation time so as to not interfere with the main contestant.

5. Meals entrée, desert and main will be judged as
taste - 10
presentation - 5
theme - 5

6. All those not competing will have to judge.

7. The main contestant is to advise the judges on the theme of the meal so that they can bring appropriate beverages and canapés.

Iron Chief 2005: Final Results!

Hi my name is Rainbow Bruce. You may remember me from yesterday's post. Let me take you now through the final stages of this year's tournament. The tension mounted as the final tally was made. The group of culinary masters gathered for the result. Who would be crowned Iron Chief 2005? BANG A GONG, LET'S GET IT ON!

Final scores are average marks out of 20 across all three courses. 10 points for taste, 10 points for presentation, and 5 points for following the theme or use of the secret ingredient. The results were announced in reverse order.

In 9th place... the long absent Pip, with an average score of 13.58. To be fair she didn't get a chance to make a dessert, and dessert generally scored highest.

In 8th place was... Pie Master Drue!

The oven turning itself off and curdling his dessert damaged his prospects early in the competition, but he came back to finish on 13.72.

In 7th place... Mr Dapper, Roger! The winner of Round 1 tumbled down the table to finish on 14.63, but wins the award for best overall presentation.

In 6th place... Queen of the Chocolate Box, Kath! The winner of Round 6 turns in a respectable 14.76, but rages on in the absence of photographic evidence of her moment of glory.

In 5th place... the Man with the Mo, Paul! After baffling the judges with his dubious themes, he cracked open the highest scoring main course and leapt to a score of 15.11.

In 4th place... she's sunny, she's springy, she knows where the towels should be, she's Claire! With one of only 3 dishes to break the 17 point mark she somehow never won an individual round, but her score of 15.52 shows her quality.

In 3rd place... Mr "when in doubt stick it in a ramekin", Edward! The only competitor to scrape into the top 4 of every course (admittedly two of them were at 4th place), his score of 15.55 shows a consistency of performance to match the consistency of his asparagus custard.

In 2nd place... a mobile phone! I mean Hayden! With a score of 15.75, what that boy can't draw with chocolate sauce, can't be drawn.

And finally, in 1st place,... it's the ever-modest super-chef, Bringer of the Borsch, Naomi! Hurrah! With a grand score of 16.15, Naomi wins the people's ovation and legendary status that befits THE IRON CHEF!!!!

Naomi and Hayden couldn't be with us this night, so we called them via satellite link-up to Townsville. Already in their night attire they were nonetheless delighted to hear they had been awarded 1st and 2nd place.

So that's yer lot. Its all over. The fat lady has sung. A chief has been crowned. Goodnight Australia.

Hi, I'm Rainbow Bruce. You may remember me from events such as 'Iron Chief 6'. I would like to welcome you to Iron Chief 9, the final round of Iron Chief 2005.

With a secret ingedient of SAGE, Kath named a theme of CIRCUS. And the head-to-head began...

Roger concentrates on gaining those all-important presentation points...

...and presents a 'chicken roll-up roll-up' with salad and dressing for our pleasure and amusement.

Kath hit back with a chicken dish of her own, and was only slightly worried by what she found under this particular piece of poultry.

She presented a main of sage chicken on a bed of fluffy sage couscous and rocket salad.

In the absence of Pip the non-competitors all brought desserts, to show off what they can do without the restraint of a theme or ingedient. The scary man with the moustache grinned wickedly when he realised he could eat fried wonton wrappers and mango, baclava and chocolate caramel brownie.

And the mighty tongs declared the evening's winner as...

Kath!
Bravo!

But who has won the overall competition? Who was crowned Iron Chief 2005?!? Stay tuned for the final announcement!!!!

The Iron Chefs go wild! Driven to the brink of insanity by the "Is it american?/Is it is asian?" theme controversy, the warrior chefs backed into kitchen, grabbed the most dangerous utensils they could find and prepared for culinary war...

Kath came out fighting with her entree of spicy vietnamese seafood salad to commemorate the americanisation of a once proud nation reduced to poverty at the back end of capitalist society as well as to give us a darn tasty starter for our dinner. Pass the champers darling!

After throwing the competition off the scent with his choice of theme, Hayden seized the secret ingredient of peanut butter with sticky hands...

...and delighted the judges with chicken satay on bok choy with homemade peanut butter.

Naomi responded with a bold interpretation of that classic american dessert, the pumpkin pie with pecans.

And the Iron Chef was crowned... Naomi!

But the fun didn't stop there. Iron Chef 8 was the final round to be attended by the stalwarts of the competition, Naomi and Hayden, who have decided to spread the Iron Chef way to the good people of Townsville.

Gifts were bestowed upon the pair. A large friendly looking recipe book and a small friendly looking toy, made by Claire. This friendly, loving quality led some of the group to christen him "Buddy Love". But as such practices may be frowned upon in Townsville, he has since assumed the alias of "Iron Bob".

So to Hayden, Naomi, and Bob (or Buddy) - good luck and stay in touch - we miss you.

And the night was started in true IRONCHIEF fashion with Paul biting into the egg to declare the competition officially OPEN :-)

As an extra special treat, the night was initiated with delicious and sizeable fresh oysters, served in the shell with cavier and a delicious vinegarette :-)

And to start the night off, we have the flavoursome entree :-) This was Olive, Rosemary and Goats Cheese Pancakes, served with Apple and Mint Jelly and some refreshing slices of apple to cleanse the palate :-)

And the glorious main dish :-) Here we had a poached duck egg stuffed with pinenuts served atop a roasted field mushroom and asparagus and roasted cherry tomatoes and parmesean cheese all drizzled with saffron infused oil. There was also a delicious spinach leaf salad and fresh bread with oil and salt dippers :-)

The delicious dessert :-) A Cardoman Laced Ice Cream with frozen Mango and garnish. All presented beautifully to resemble the mystery ingredient of Egg

Roger starts to announce to result, who will take it? Who will be triumphant on the night of nights?

The anticipation hangs in the air, all eyes are fixed on the Judge to see if any hints are going to be given as to where the glory will lie......

And the announcement was made, dissappoint, elation and relief abounded from the three iron
chiefs, but there can be only one and Iron Chief Paul it was :-)

Well, it was a fun night for all involved and many intricate conversations were animatedly discussed and much laughter was had. All that remains is for the true rules of Uno to be agreed upon and all will be right in the world ;-)

With the secret ingredient of CAPSICUM announced from Drue's secret base in Cambodia, Edward decided to do the honourable thing and stuff it. And so the theme for the evening's festivities was declared: PARCELS. So on Saturday 17 September a more intimate group than usual sat down to a well-wrapped feast.

Unfortunately our special guest judge for the evening, Mr Benjamin Hayes, took all the photos and has not yet been able to supply them, grossly underestimating the seriousness of the whole affair and incurring the wrath of the evening's winner. So for now you will just have to imagine the scene...

Claire's entree was a juicy tender chicken fillet rolled around a blend of camenbert, apricot, sultanas and pine nuts, accompanied by a vinegrette of red wine, balsamic and sugar (I'm getting hungry).

Edward's main course was a red capsicum stuffed with a fragrant Kashmiri Dum Aloo curry, consisting of potato, capsicum, spinach, yoghurt and lots of cloves and cardomon. This was served on a bed of rice infused with nuts and spices (my belly's rumbling).

Kath's dessert was an intricately constructed (but form followed function) chocolate box full of a rich creamy chocolate mousse, accompanied by an ice cream truffle. This was all lovingly wrapped in ribbon and stamped confidential (that's it, I'm going to lunch).

The group's competitive spirit was raised by a game of pass the parcel, which was won by Paul. His prize was one of Claire's designer toys, which Paul named Rainbow Bruce.

With the crowd now in a frenzy the Iron Chef was crowned..... KATH!

Welcome back to the preliminaries of IRON CHIEF V.

The competition is starting to heat up with half the compeditors allready having completed thier Main Course Chanllange. Last month we witnessed contoverey when a tie was announced for first place. Drue and Paul made claims and counter-claims of foul play soiled what was previously a freindly game. The police and riot squad were called in to prevent things getting ugly as supporters of either side started looking for sharp cooking utensiles to vent thier frustrations. Paul was able to escape to the carpark but eyewitnesses claimed to have heard some wailing noises moments later. There have been no sightings of Paul since. This is of some concern as he is due to prepare entree this Saturday.

Along with Paul, Hayden will be doing his best to live up to his pink reputation in the preparation of Desert. Drue will be taking on the main. The competition once again sets Drue angainst Paul. With the comeptition would be so ferocious at this stage, there is some concern that people will make it onto the list of secrete ingredients.

The secrete ingrediant of LEEK (No. 35) has been declared at a ceremony earlier today. Immediately Drue responded with the theme of the competition 'What The Hoff would eat if he were to become a merman for a day'. Dedazzeled by his craftsmanship with words, the judges imediately requested a different theme. Degrudgingly he changed it to 'Dean Martin's Last night in Town'

So bring your Martini Glass, Fancy pants dress and escort and come along to Claire and Ed's house at 7:00pm, for a night of good food and swing.

oh wow!

There's protesters out the front of our building! They're protesting about Flower Power, and they've all got massive fake sunflowers and drums and they're all dancing to the rhythm of change and democracy! And also there are massive police horses guarding each side of the front door, and about five police cars, and nobody is allowed in or out of the building. When I went outside to eat my mandarine at afternoon break time, I had to get a special security escort personnel to show me out the secret back passageway. Cool.
